The Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) provides legal services for the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio), an academic health institution comprising eight professional schools, specialty clinics, and a Multi-Specialty Research Hospital. This page aims to offer guidance on frequently asked questions regarding UT Health San Antonio’s policies and practices in various contexts. Before proceeding with your request, please verify that you are contacting the appropriate department.

What to Do If You Receive a Subpoena

The Office of Legal Affairs cannot accept a subpoena on behalf of an individual, nor can we give out contact information.

Providers or employees are not custodians of medical records. Subpoenas requesting records should be addressed to the appropriate department, not the individual provider or employee.

If you receive a subpoena, please keep in mind the following:

• You are encouraged to contact our office so we can help you navigate through this process.

• As attorneys for UTHSCSA, our representation is limited. We extend legal support to individual doctors only if the University or the individual doctor is directly involved in the legal proceeding or if there’s potential liability.
• Although you are employed by UTHSCSA and provided care as a doctor under its umbrella, our representation doesn’t cover your attendance at a legal proceeding as a fact witness for care you’ve administered.

Charges of Discrimination

Any notice of charge of discrimination filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or Texas Workforce Commission should be directed to the Office of Legal Affairs at ola@uthscsa.edu for immediate review. OLA is responsible for managing and responding to all charges of discrimination filed against the University.

Request for Medical Records

Our office is not the custodian for medical or billing records.

• Medical records can be requested by visiting Medical Records Request.
• Billing records can be requested by visiting Billing Records Request.

Claims History Request

Requests for claims verification should be directed to ola@uthscsa.edu.
